How to control Philips Hue lights without a Bridge
Short answer: every Hue bulb made since 2019 has Bluetooth built in, and you can switch, dim and colour it directly from your phone with no Bridge, no hub and no account. Here is exactly how.
Step 1: Check your bulb actually has Bluetooth
Look at the box, or the small print on the bulb itself, for a Bluetooth logo. As a rule of thumb: if you bought it in 2019 or later, it has Bluetooth. Philips Hue bulbs sold before that are Zigbee-only, and Zigbee needs a Bridge, there is no way around that for those older bulbs.
Step 2: Leave the wall switch on
A Bluetooth bulb only responds while it has mains power. If someone turns it off at the wall, your phone can no longer reach it, the same way a wall-mounted remote stops working. Leave the physical switch on and do the actual switching from your phone.
Step 3: Pair it with a Bluetooth control app
This is the part most guides skip. Apple's own Home app does not talk to Hue bulbs over Bluetooth on its own, and Philips' own Hue app nudges you toward buying a Bridge at almost every step, even though the bulb does not need one.

Step 4: Put the switch where you'll actually use it
